TOP 7 WEB DESIGN MISTAKES
1. GOING CHEAP INSTEAD SMART
You have just come up with a great idea for an online business, or you already have an existing business and would like to transfer it online. Great that’s a brilliant idea. Now is the tough part, you wouldn’t like to spend much money on it, and that’s obvious, but there is a huge difference between going cheap and going smart about it.
CHEAP WAY: Most people and businesses first thought is to go to DoneDeal or Upwork to get a freelancer to create a website for them. This idea is good but can go both ways, and you could find someone who will take the money and depart without finishing your project or they lack the knowledge to finish your project. But hey you didn’t spend much money so that’s great right?
SMART WAY: Set your budget and research the professionals. Take your time before calling or going forward with your project.
Get a paper and write about your project:
- What would you like to get from it?
- Who are your main competitors?
- Analyse your competition and choose features from their website you like the most.
Prepare for conversations with agencies or freelancers so that you can them what exactly you are looking for.
Ask for the Proposal and Contract before handing over any cash!
2. NOT RESEARCHING YOUR WEBSITE DESIGN AGENCY OR FREELANCER
Research Agencies or Freelancers and always ask:
- Do they have the qualifications to work as Agency of Freelancer?
- Do they have any relevant experience?
- Do they have previous client reviews?
- Do their previous projects look and work well?
If you checked all of the above then start calling them.
3. COPyING CONTENT FROM OTHER WEBSITES
We know that the easiest way to create content is to copy from someone/somewhere else but remember that this practice will hurt your SEO and also by doing this you are doing plagiarism.
4. NO VISIBLE CONTACT DETAILS
Quick design is wrong design. While you are creating a website with someone, remember to place contact details in places which are visible for customers. The best practice for placing contact information is the top bar “email address % phone number”. Footer (bottom of the page) simple contact form.
5. CREATE WEBSITE AND DON’T MARKET OR USE IT AFTER IS DONE
The most common sentence from some of our clients is “I just need a website as I have a website address on my business card” ?
Owning a website is not everything. By owning a website this is just the first step, get someone to do SEO for you. While focusing on your business, your website is going up in search results. It takes around 1-2 months before results will be noticeable.
6. FORGETTING ABOUT WEBSITE PERFORMANCE
WEBSITE PERFORMANCE is the main factor for bounce rate.
BOUNCE RATE: is when a user goes to your website and drops out without any interaction.
We have written an article about why Website Performance Matters. Lots of websites that we have worked on in the past were quickly designed and performance was not even checked, as most of the business owners didn’t know even how to check this.
7. NOT CONNECTING A WEBSITE WITH GOOGLE CONSOLE & GOOGLE ANALYTICS
As a business owner please remember to ask your freelancer/agency to assign your Gmail to Google Console & Google Analytics thanks to this you will be able to see how your website performs. Later in time you could start marketing campaigns and while your website has been connected to Google Analytics & Google Console, marketers will have more information about your audience and will be able to set more tailored and better targeted Google AdWords Campaigns
