Why Isn't My Business Showing Up on Google? 7 Common Reasons (and How to Fix Them)?

Can't find your business on Google? Here are the seven most common reasons Irish businesses stay invisible in search and on Maps, and how to fix each one.

If you search for your own business and can't find it, you're not alone. It's the single most common problem Irish business owners bring to us. The good news is that the cause is usually one of seven fixable things, and some of them take days, not months, to sort out.

First, a 2-minute check

Type site:yourdomain.ie into Google (using your real domain). If no pages come up, Google hasn't indexed your website at all, and that's your starting point. If pages do come up, Google knows you exist but isn't ranking you, which is a different problem. Then search your business name plus your town. If no map listing appears, your Google Business Profile needs attention.

1. Your Google Business Profile is missing or unverified

For local searches like "plumber Tallaght" or "café near me", Google shows the map pack first. Those three map results come from Google Business Profiles, not websites. If you haven't claimed and verified a profile, you can't appear there, however good your website is.

How to fix it:

  1. Claim your profile at business.google.com, or create one if none exists.

  2. Verify it using the method Google offers.

  3. Choose the most specific primary category for your main service.

  4. Fill in every field: hours, phone, website, services and description.

Our Google Business Profile guide walks through each step.

2. Google can't index your website

New sites, sites rebuilt by a developer who left a "discourage search engines" setting switched on, and sites with no sitemap can all be invisible to Google. We see this more often than you'd think after a rushed launch.

How to fix it:

  1. Check your site for "noindex" settings, including WordPress's "Discourage search engines" box.

  2. Set up Google Search Console for your domain.

  3. Submit your XML sitemap in Search Console.

  4. Request indexing for your homepage and key service pages.

  5. Check the Pages report a week later to confirm they're indexed.

Our technical SEO work starts with exactly these checks.

3. Your website doesn't say what you do or where

Google matches searches to words on the page. If your homepage says "Welcome to our family business" but never says "electrician in Naas", Google has little to match. Many small business sites are beautiful but vague.

How to fix it:

  1. List every service you offer and every area you cover.

  2. Give each main service its own page.

  3. Name the service and area in each page's main heading, such as "Electrician in Naas".

  4. Put the same phrase in the page title Google shows in results.

  5. Link to each service page from your homepage.

This is the core of on-page SEO: every page clearly saying what you do and where.

4. Your site is slow or broken on mobile

Most local searches happen on phones. If your site takes five seconds to load or the menu doesn't work on a small screen, people leave and Google notices. When we rebuilt our own site, we cut load time from 3.2 seconds to 0.6 seconds.

How to fix it:

  1. Open your site on your own phone and try the menu, buttons and contact form.

  2. Run a speed check on your homepage and a key service page.

  3. Compress large images, the most common cause of slow pages.

  4. Remove plugins or scripts you don't use.

Our free Website Opportunity Review checks speed and mobile for you.

5. You have few or no reviews

Reviews are a strong signal for the map pack. A competitor with 40 recent reviews will usually outrank one with three from 2019.

How to fix it:

  1. Copy your review link from your Google Business Profile ("Ask for reviews").

  2. Send it to happy customers straight after a job, by text or email.

  3. Ask every customer the same way, not only the ones you expect to be happy.

  4. Reply to every review, good or bad.

6. Your business details don't match across the web

If your address, phone number or business name differs between your website, your Google profile, Facebook and directories like Golden Pages, Google gets less confident about who you are.

How to fix it:

  1. Decide one exact version of your business name, address, Eircode and phone number.

  2. Update your website footer and contact page to match.

  3. Update your Google Business Profile and social media pages.

  4. Update directory listings, and correct any duplicates you find.

Then list the same details on reputable directories, such as Golden Pages and Huubr, our own Irish business directory. Consistent listings help Google trust that your details are correct.

7. Competitors have simply done more

Sometimes nothing is broken. Your competitors have older sites, more content and more websites linking to them. That's where proper SEO work comes in, and it takes months rather than weeks. See how long SEO takes for a realistic timeline.

That's what our SEO services in Dublin are built for: steady, measurable work over months, not quick tricks.

Where to start

Work through the list in order. Reasons 1 to 6 are mostly one-off fixes. Reason 7 is ongoing work. If you'd rather not do it yourself, we'll look at your site and tell you honestly which of these is holding you back.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a new website to show up on Google?

Google usually indexes a new site within a few days to a few weeks, faster if you submit a sitemap in Search Console. Ranking well for competitive searches takes longer, typically three to six months.

Why does my business show on Google Maps but not in normal search results?

Map results come from your Google Business Profile, while normal results come from your website. A strong profile with a weak website, or the reverse, is common. Both need work for full visibility.

Do I need to pay Google to appear?

No. Organic and map results are free. Google Ads lets you pay to appear at the top immediately, but it's optional.
